Beautiful Pergola!
Very beautiful and stunning pergola! I was able to build this by myself. It took me one week to do, but I just took my time to make sure everything was correct. I had to do some things differently. For example, after I mounted the 4x4 posts to the mounting plates, I put them on the ground. Then I put the column sleeves on the posts. Then mounted the posts with columns to the anchors. There was no way that I was getting on a ladder to install the columns. Ha! Also, my concrete patio has a 2 inch slope over the 10ft. So I had to get a bit creative. I used pressure treated 2x4 blocks to lift the front mounting plates off the concrete. I used 5 inch wedge anchors for the front plates and 3 inch anchors for the back plates. Then I got a white 1x3.5 PVC board to trim the gap at the bottom. You can see that in the pics. Worked out really well. Just make sure when you lay out the mounting plates, that they are as square and level as humanly possible because there's not much room for error when you start installing the rafters and louvers. Also, I recommend not screwing in the rafters until the louvers are installed to make sure it all fits properly. That's what I did. One recommendation for Vita would be to swap out the 4 inch phillips head screws for hex bolt head screws. The phillips screw heads strip out too easily. Other than that, it's a very nice kit! We will enjoy this pergola for a very long time! Thanks Vita!!
Preston Louvered Pergola
The instructions said the 4 x 4 posts should be maximum of 3.625 and mine measured 3.550 and would not fit in tubes. Spent several hours with sanding disk to get them to fit. Bolts very cheap heads break and strip out. Had to buy extra glue not enough supplied in kit. Looks nice but company is being cheap in wrong areas. Instructions page 8 tells you to use a 5/16 drill to pre drill holes to mount mounting plate with but the screws are 5/16. It should be 3/16 drill bit. Instructions have you cut 4 x 4 post to 94 inches which means you cut 2 inches off a 8 foot post. No need to do this as there is plenty room in cover cap for the extra 2 inches and also would give the 1/2 inch cross hole in top more room to end of 4 x 4 for strength. The wood in the notched rafter beams are only long enough to support the inside notches so when you put the screws in from the top the outside notch in the plastic has no support so you have to be careful putting the screw in so it does not break thru the plastic.
